Tech Star Tuesday: How Paul Hayden Turned a Childhood Hobby into a Career!

This week, we’re introducing Paul Hayden from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Paul’s journey into lasers started the same way it has for many people in the industry—with curiosity. What began as childhood fascination eventually turned into a career built around creativity and live entertainment.

When asked how he got started, Paul smiled and shared his story.

What inspired you to get into the laser industry?

“Like so many others I messed with them as a kid, had the chance to work with them when I was working with a hands on science center. I do a lot of RGB Christmas light displays for larger venues, they are always looking for the next greatest thing to display. Lasers are a logical addition, so here I am again.”

That passion for creating something special is still what motivates him today. While the technology is exciting, it’s the audience that makes every show worthwhile.

What’s been one of your proudest moments?

“Being able to see people enjoy your creativity.”

Of course, every event comes with its own challenges. For Paul, one moment stands above the rest.

When you’re behind the controls, what’s your biggest responsibility?

“For Christmas shows it’s the tree lighting. Such a hyped buildup and so many things that can go sideways.”

Even with years of experience, Paul believes there’s always something new to learn. That’s why he encourages newcomers to find someone they can learn from.

What advice would you give someone just getting started?

“A good mentor is everything, and no you can’t have mine..lol.”

Most recently, Paul helped celebrate Independence Day by bringing laser entertainment to the Delavan, Wisconsin Fourth of July Show.

Whether he’s lighting up a Christmas tree, enhancing a Fourth of July celebration, or creating a brand-new display, Paul enjoys seeing people connect with the experience. It’s that excitement—and the smiles from the crowd—that keeps him coming back for the next show.

Thank you, Paul, for sharing your story and for being part of the team!
