Sometimes a new opportunity makes sense only after you step into it.
That’s where Brian Blake finds himself today. Based in St. Petersburg, Florida, Brian works in sales for Laser Light Company, connecting customers with the team while getting a firsthand introduction to an industry that’s completely new to him.
For this week’s Tech Star Tuesday, we’re meeting someone at the beginning of the story rather than years into it.
So, How Did Lasers Happen?
Brian’s path into the industry wasn’t something he had mapped out. Still, there was one part of the opportunity that felt familiar from the beginning.
“This is my first year. I fell into it unexpectedly but coincidentally have always had a passion for Lighting so this turns out to be an excellent fit. ”
That has given him plenty to take in, from the sales side of the business to seeing how different events come together.
And lately, the milestones have been stacking up.
A Pretty Good Week for Year One
We asked Brian what moments have stood out to him so far.
“Got my LSO last week and this week will be the first week I will have 2 events going on a corporate event in Houston and breast cancer charity event in Iowa. I’ve also helped the company collect 14 5 star reviews on google since joining the team. ”
There’s a lot packed into that answer.
Earning his Laser Safety Officer Certification marks another step forward. Meanwhile, helping generate positive customer feedback speaks to the part of the business he knows well: building relationships.
No Pretending to Know It All
Being the new person on a team can come with pressure. However, Brian isn’t trying to skip ahead.
When asked about his biggest responsibility while in action, his answer was probably the most relatable one possible.
“I’m still just learning so just trying to not to make any mistakes! ”
There’s something refreshing about that approach.
Learn the process. Pay attention. Ask questions. Then keep moving forward.
What About Advice?
Tech Star Tuesday usually gives our featured team member a chance to pass along a little wisdom.
Brian had a different response.
“I’m honestly in no position at this point to advise future techs. But some generic advice for techs working our events would be to make sure to read notes/files in the drop box link in gigwell notes. ”
Fair enough.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is know what you know—and know what you’re still figuring out.
So, Where Is Brian Now?
Busy.
“Hog August Bites was my last show with two more happening this week ”
Two more projects ahead, a new certification under his belt, and a first year that has already taken a few unexpected turns.
Brian didn’t enter Laser Light Company with a long history in lasers.
He entered with an interest in lighting, a willingness to learn, and a role that puts him in contact with the people who make these events possible.
