Tech Star Tuesday: Nikko Payne Is Making His Mark on New Orleans Nightlife!

This week’s Tech Star Tuesday introduces Nikko Payne, a laser technician based out of New Orleans, Louisiana.

With a background in music and a growing career in laser production, Nikko brings an artistic perspective to his work. His experience shows how creativity and technical skills can come together in the live entertainment industry.

From Music to Laser Artistry

For Nikko, working with lasers started with a connection to music.

When asked why he chose the industry and how long he’d been involved, he explained:

“Ive been in stage lighting for two years, with a focus on laser light artistry and safety for one.I came to lasers through music. I release and DJ under the name TAMA-LOA, and I’ve always been drawn to how light can make a crowd feel the drop. Lasers are the closest thing to drawing with the music itself. Once I got into the programming and safety side, I was hooked. It’s equal parts art, tech, and responsibility, and that combination is what keeps me in it.”

His background gives him a perspective that combines the artistic and technical sides of live production.

A New Chapter in New Orleans

Every technician has projects that stand out during their career.

For Nikko, one of his proudest moments involves an opportunity in his hometown.

When asked about a recent career highlight, he shared:

“Most recently, I was brought on as laser operator and safety officer to set up a brand-new underground venue in the historic Frenchmen Neighborhood of the French Quarter in New Orleans.”

The project marks an exciting opportunity for Nikko as he continues building his experience in the industry.

What Matters Behind the Controls

Operating lasers during a live performance involves more than creating visual effects.

Technicians must stay focused and make decisions while the show is happening.

When asked about his biggest responsibility during a performance, Nikko answered:

“A great show only counts if everyone walks out with their eyes intact. After that, my job is reading the room and keeping the looks locked to the music.”

Advice for Future Laser Technicians

For anyone interested in entering the laser industry, learning the fundamentals is an important first step.

We asked Nikko what advice he would give aspiring laser technicians.

“Learn the safety side before the flashy side. Get your LSO training and understand your variance, then learn your software inside and out. Anyone can make a laser look cool. The techs who get called back are the ones the venue never has to worry about.”

The Latest: Favela Underground

Nikko has also been involved in a recent project in New Orleans.

When asked about his latest event, he shared:

“The opening show of the venue im helping put together, Favela Underground, New Orleans, on October 10 with Sir Spyro.”

As Nikko continues developing his career, his work reflects a passion for both music and visual artistry.

We look forward to seeing what’s next for him as he explores new opportunities in live production.
