This week on Tech Star Tuesday, we’re highlighting Douglas Martin, based out of Austin, Texas. With over a decade in the live event world, he continues to grow and take on new challenges within the industry.
Right from the start, his path was driven by passion.
“I originally started working in the AV industry, fresh out of high school, over a decade ago because growing up. I always enjoyed going to concerts and live events.”
Then, that passion turned into a career decision.
“So I thought what could be better than turning that hobby into a career. I primarily operated events for audio and lighting gigs, but over the past year. I started to make the transition to laser operating, because the opportunity was presented to me and I was excited about learning a new discipline that was rapidly growing.”
Moments That Made an Impact
As his journey continues, certain experiences stand out.
“This year alone, I have already had the privilege to operate lasers for several mid cap sized venues in the Central Texas area,”
And then, one moment in particular stood out even more.
“but my proudest laser moment from recent memory was during Wicked Oaks at the end of 2025.”
That experience brought something new.
“It was my first time helping a laser department for a large festival and getting hands-on experience with some of the main operators for Laser Light Company was a blast.”
And it continued to build from there.
“Being able to assist with a rig that size, help punt some for the opening acts and get a lot of quality feedback from them was beyond valuable in jump starting my recent laser journey.”
Responsibility Comes First
When it comes to being on site, Douglas keeps his focus clear.
“This point was repeated countless times at the recent Laser Light Conference, but its safety.”
He keeps that message simple.
“Lasers are as only fun as they are safe.”
And that mindset carries through every stage of the process.
“So if that is not at the front of your mind from set-up to tear down. You are already failing responsibilities when operating lasers.”
Advice for the Next Generation
For those stepping into the field, Douglas shares advice from his own experience.
“As a still young and ever learning laser tech myself, its patience.”
Because growth takes time.
“Lasers definitely can have a harsh learning curve.”
Even early on, the challenge is real.
“Even after a few weeks of practice. The complexity and depth of tools like Beyond and PangoScript can seem impossible to grasp,”
But staying consistent makes the difference.
“but don’t get discouraged. Just put in the hours to youtubing, practicing and polishing up your show page and you’ll see the results translate to your live shows in due time.”
Most Recent Event
Most recently, Douglas had the opportunity to work during SXSW in Austin.
“During this recent SXSW in Austin, Texas.”
That opportunity stood out right away.
“I got the opportunity to run lasers at The Venue for a France Assembly event.”
And the experience meant a lot.
“The main act that night was Yuksek, who is a very well respected French DJ. So it was a huge honor to be able to operate for such an event.”
From AV to lasers, Douglas Martin continues to build his path with intention. Step by step. Show by show.
And the journey is still moving forward.
