Based in the Tampa Bay Area, Florida, Monica Holton has been part of the lighting industry for over 15 years. Her journey started in a completely different creative field — but, as she tells it, everything eventually “fell into place.”
From Design to Lasers
Monica’s path into live production began behind a screen. “I began my life journey as a Graphic Designer and Video Editor,” she shares. That creative foundation quickly opened new doors. “It led to doing live video visuals and lighting at clubs. Finally, I was introduced to lasers and it all fell into place.”
Her story is one of progression — each step leading naturally to the next. The moment she discovered lasers, her career found its rhythm.
The Passion Behind Every Project
When asked about her proudest moments, Monica doesn’t single one out. Instead, she reflects on what keeps her going. “I don’t know that I can pinpoint my proudest moments, but I can say the amount of love and passion I have for the industry makes every experience a highlight.”
For her, success isn’t about one big milestone. It’s about doing what she loves, time after time, and watching her art connect with others.
Making the Music Visible
Monica’s technical expertise goes beyond buttons and beams — it’s about translating sound into sight. “Besides all of the technical aspects making sure everything works, I would say when in action my biggest responsibility is making sure the attendees of the event can visually see the music and be encompassed by the experience.”
That sense of purpose drives her. “I want the vibe, the music, and the lasers to all coincide as one. I pride myself in elevating the audio artist beyond expectations.”
Advice for Future Laser Technicians
When it comes to newcomers, Monica’s advice is both simple and sincere. “Enjoy what you do with a passion, and any missteps or setbacks along the way are a lot more tolerable.” It’s a reminder that enthusiasm and resilience matter as much as technical skill.
Continuing to Create the Experience
Even after more than a decade in the industry, Monica continues to bring light and life to every project. She’s been a longtime resident laser tech at Hyde Park Café, helping shape the club’s signature visual experience. One event especially close to her heart is Hallucination Before Christmas, taking place this year on December 13th.
“It’s gearing up to be spectacular,” she says — and with her at the helm, there’s no doubt it will be.
