This week on Tech Star Tuesday, we’re highlighting Johnathan “Johnnyonlights” Cortes, based out of St. Petersburg. With nearly a decade in show production and a growing focus on lasers, Johnathan continues to build his place in live events through creativity, collaboration, and experience.
Right from the start, the industry felt like the right fit.
“I’ve been in show production for around 10 years but only started working with lasers in the last year or so.”
And over time, that connection only grew stronger.
“This industry feels like home , I get to collaborate with some of my favorite humans to bring artistic visions to life and hopefully bring lasting memories to audiences.”
Moments That Stand Out
As his journey continues, several projects have left a lasting impact.
“Designing the stage for Bob Moses / One of Us show this year at Curtis Hixon felt like a full circle moment for me.”
That experience meant a lot personally and professionally.
At the same time, other events helped reinforce that momentum.
“Also helping with the Daily Bread tour stop at jannus for two nights last November.”
And being part of productions at recognizable local venues added another milestone.
“Being part of shows at some of Tampa Bays favorite outdoor venues has always been a goal I got to check off recently.”
Keeping Safety First
When it comes to live production, Johnathan keeps one thing at the center of everything.
“Safety is always priority , if there’s any doubt whatsoever regarding safety it’s best to address it and provide solutions.”
That mindset stays consistent from planning to execution.
Advice for Future Techs
For those looking to grow in the industry, Johnathan encourages patience and awareness.
“Assess all angles of a production, don’t try to force your way into a team or a moment.”
Because timing matters.
“When the timing is right you’ll know.”
And above all else, keep learning.
“Most importantly , ask questions!!”
Recent Projects and What’s Ahead
Most recently, Johnathan returned from working the Texas Roadhouse Conference in Nashville alongside the J. Thor Productions team.
“I just got back from doing the Texas Roadhouse Conference in Nashville with the J. Thor Productions team as the ME and did the engineering and prep work for nearly 300 lighting fixtures.”
And the momentum continues.
“Also I’ll be helping with bringing the Blond:ish Tampa show to life at the end of this month of May , which I’m really looking forward to.”
From lighting to lasers, Johnathan Cortes continues to grow through hands-on experience and meaningful collaboration. One production at a time.
And the journey is only getting bigger.
