Tech Star Tuesday: Jacob Kuhl — From Pandemic Discovery to Premier Laser Shows

Jacob Kuhl, based in Dallas, Texas, didn’t plan on a career in lasers.
But once he found them, he never looked back.

“I have been in the industry for five years. I got my first laser in the pandemic and fell in love,” Jacob says.
At the time, he was throwing weekly parties in Fort Worth and wanted to raise the bar.
“I was looking for ways to set our shows apart and increase our production value and this is when I turned to lasers.”

That decision changed everything.

After renting gear for his own events, he saw a bigger opportunity.
“I eventually learned after renting out gear that I could make a career out of this and quit my job of 10 years in software development to jump in to this full time.”

From Backyard Events to Bucket-List Venues

Jacob’s bold career shift paid off.
He’s since operated at some of the most iconic venues in the country.

“I think one of my proudest moments would have to be getting to operate at Red Rocks and The Gorge in Washington,” he shares.
“Those venues are absolutely incredible outdoor venues that everyone should see at least once in their life.”

Big shows, big energy—but also big responsibility.

Laser Power, Laser Precision

Jacob works shows that require serious equipment and careful planning.
That’s why safety is his top concern.

“It is always the safety of the crowd and performers on stage,” he says.
“When you have the kind of firepower that is required on most shows that I work on there is no room for error when it comes to safe zoning to keep beams out of the audience and performers unless done with proper audience scanning devices and safety measures.”

He treats every setup with full attention to detail.

Advice Built on Curiosity

When asked what he would tell future laser techs, Jacob doesn’t hesitate.
“My biggest advice would be to try to not be the smartest person in the room and learn from everyone you can.”

That mindset has fueled his growth.
“I would always ask other departments all sorts of general AV related questions to just learn as much as humanly possible while on sites.”

Learning by doing—and asking.

What’s New?

Jacob’s most recent show was with CamelPhat at Silo Dallas.
A local gig, but a high-impact production.

Like every event, it added more to his experience, more to his technical toolbox, and more to his love for lasers.

From small parties to major stages, Jacob’s journey is powered by curiosity, courage, and precision—one show at a time.
