Tech Star Tuesday: Curtis Pacific’s Unplanned Rise from College Promos to Laser Pro!

Curtis Pacific, based in St. Petersburg, Florida, has been in the production world for over 13 years.
But as he puts it, “the path that got me here wasn’t something I planned.”

His introduction came through his brother, a DMC-awarded DJ.
During college, Curtis got the chance to promote national shows for Prime Social Group.
That was his first real taste of live events.

Later, he moved to Atlanta and worked with an underground venue called Iris @ Rush Lounge.
One night, the lighting director needed a hand.
Curtis stepped in—and that moment shifted everything.
He says, “I started learning lighting and eventually lasers under Joey, and I stuck with it for years.”

That hands-on start opened big doors.
He landed a role with Live Nation as an L1 at The Old National Centre in Indianapolis.
Meanwhile, he was throwing his own shows and renting lasers from Laser Light Company.
Eventually, he bought his own pair—and that relationship led to a spot on the team.

He trained under Mitchell and Clayton, two of the company’s techs.
“They really helped me refine my skills and understand the deeper technical and safety aspects of laser work,” Curtis explains.

Now, he’s a Laser Safety Officer, working directly out of the shop in St. Pete.

A Turning Point in the Craft

One of his most meaningful experiences was building a show series called Prototype Culture – The Panic Room, alongside his friend Steve Garza.

They brought in big names like DJ Pierre, Harvard Bass, Tommie Sunshine, and Sam Wolfe.
“That’s really the point where everything clicked for me,” Curtis says.
“I locked in, focused hard on becoming better at my craft, and started seriously honing my skills as a laser tech.”

Still, Curtis says some of his favorite moments come from smaller shows.
“Honestly, the smaller and more intimate shows still stand out as some of my favorite moments—those are the rooms where the energy feels the most real.”

Always Lead With Safety

Curtis doesn’t take his responsibilities lightly.
“The safety of everyone on site is always my first priority,” he says.
“Lasers are powerful tools, and if they’re not handled correctly, they can cause serious injury.”

Whether programming or aligning, he ensures every step is intentional.
“Proper calculations, proper zoning, proper communication with the team,” he notes.
“At the end of the day, no show is worth compromising someone’s well-being.”

Advice Worth Remembering

When asked for advice to upcoming techs, Curtis shares a few gems:

“For me, symmetry is one of the keys to success in laser design—it keeps the show clean, intentional, and visually balanced.”

He also emphasizes the power of smart habits:
“I always save my work frequently, I write down my FB4 numbers in order, and I make sure my internet license is updated before heading to areas with weak service.”

Those small steps? They prevent big problems on show day.

Recent Shows & Creative Growth

Curtis has recently worked with artists like Carl Cox, Josh Teed, and Jenga.
He’s also been part of large-scale productions like Metamorphosis Music Festival and Dirtybird CampINN.

“Those kinds of events really remind me why I love doing what I do—the energy, the challenge, and the community around it,” he shares.

Curtis’s journey is proof that passion, mentorship, and hustle can create a career.
From DJ booths to laser consoles, he’s found his rhythm—and he’s lighting up stages every step of the way.
