Northwestern University Takes Sports Promos to the Next Level with a Laser Cone!

Lasers aren’t just for concerts and festivals. This time, they stepped in front of the camera at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Working with Full Tank, Laser Light Company provided a custom laser setup for a sports video and photo shoot. The goal was simple—create bold visuals that would stand out on camera and give the promotional content a completely different look.

Building a Look for the Camera

With four 24-watt lasers, the production offered plenty of opportunities to experiment with angles, shapes, and movement.

One of the featured looks was a laser cone. Beams surrounded the subject and created a sharp, dimensional effect for the cameras to capture. Meanwhile, the team could adjust the setup to create different looks throughout the session.

Unlike a live show, every detail had to work through the camera lens. Placement mattered. Timing mattered. Even small adjustments could completely change the final shot.

Brian Johnson Behind the Lasers

Laser Technician Brian Johnson handled the laser side of the production. Throughout the shoot, he worked with the creative direction to help build each visual and get the right effect for both photography and video.

The controlled setting also gave the team room to try different ideas. As a result, the lasers became more than a background element. They became part of the overall design of the shoot.

A Different Side of Laser Production

Sports media is all about capturing attention quickly. So, bringing lasers into the mix offered another way to create content with impact.

From the powerful beams to the laser cone, this Northwestern University project showed just how versatile laser production can be. No stage or packed crowd was needed. Instead, it was all about creativity, collaboration, and getting that perfect shot.
